Nevada ranks as 9th worst state to retire

The best state for retirees, according to Bankrate's list, might be a bit surprising. The Mount Rushmore State's weakest ranking was weather, landing at number 38 for that category.

New Jersey was ranked the worst in taxes and near the bottom, at No. 42, for cost of living. The Empire State was ranked 50th in cost of living and 49th in taxes.

In South Dakota - one of the most tax-friendly states in the US - residents pay no personal income tax, and the median rent for a 1-bedroom apartment is $565, according to data from Apartment List.

Also toward the bottom were New Mexico, Maryland, and Louisiana.

While Utah, Idaho and New Hampshire took hits for their chilly weather, they fared well enough on other quality-of-life issues to keep them in the top five.

'All this together shows what people should be looking for, and that doesn't necessarily mean move to some place warm, ' he said, noting that Arizona is a popular retirement destination despite ranking 29th. The cost of living is among the most important factors due to the fact that a comfortable retirement is affordable, while health care quality also matters as you get up in age.

If you are like many, you may be daydreaming about the day you can retire, and where you will live. NY came up last.

IL has been ranked as the 7th worst state for retirement. Arkansas was slightly worse than California.
