Russian cargo ship docks at ISS in record time

13 July 2018, 12:46 | Justin Tyler

The of late concluded flight was made to display accelerated capacity that may be utilized on subsequent Russian cargo and crew launches wrote NASA officials.

The station's current crew includes NASA astronauts Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold and Serena Aunon-Chancellor, a European Space Agency's astronaut from Germany, Alexander Gerst, and Russians Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev.

In the near future, humans might be able to leave earth after eating breakfast, arriving at the space station in time for lunch. It is now scheduled to launch in August 2019, but that may be postponed again, to 2020, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik International.

Space.com notes that ISS crew members just stuff the Progress capsules with waste, then sent away to burn up in the atmosphere. The first Progress launch was in 1978 to the Soviet space station Salyut 6. The previous record time from takeoff to docking was around six hours, and that involved four orbits.

Russian cargo ship places a novel record for the speediest trip to space station.

Cargo vessels operated by SpaceX and Northrop Grumman take several days to reach the ISS post-launch.

The first attempt occurred in October 2017 using the Progress 68 spacecraft, but a last-minute delay forced Roscosmos to shift to the older, 2-day flight profile due to the orbital mechanics needed for the faster trip.

The same thing happened with the Progress 69 cargo launch in February.

Progress 70 is not ready to come home yet. "Third time was the charm". That mission, HTV-7, will take about 4 hours to reach the ISS after launching from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center. That put the spacecraft about eight minutes ahead of schedule.
