Kremlin rejects Trump's description of Germany as Russian 'captive'

The Kremlin says a new prospective natural gas pipeline to Germany will help increase regional stability and strengthen ties between Russian Federation and the West.

US President Donald Trump has criticized Germany over its support for the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, claiming this gives Russian Federation power over European energy.

Since his arrival on Tuesday to Brussels for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, Trump has already criticized several times those members of the Alliance who participate in the Nord Stream 2 project.

Nord Stream 2 is a pipeline project to transport natural gas from eastern Russian Federation to northern Germany, where it would link up with infrastructure that carries fuel to Western Europe, reported CNBC.

"We have been clear that firms working in the Russian energy export pipeline sector are engaging in a line of business that carries sanctions risk", a spokesman for the U.S. State Department told Reuters.

This is not the first time Trump has bashed Germany over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

The United States, for a number of geopolitical reasons, is vehemently objecting to the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

"US officials have advised me not to believe claims that the Nord Stream 2 project was underway and could not be stopped", said Polish foreign minister Jacek Czaputowicz. So we're supposed to protect Germany, but they're getting their energy from Russian Federation.

Earlier, trump criticized the implementation of the "Nord stream - 2".

"We're also going to discuss one other specific issue of deep concern to me and to everybody here, and I think that's the Nord Stream 2 pipeline", Kerry said then.

Constructive and stable cooperation between Russia and Ukraine in the field of energy is of utmost importance for both countries and the European Union, Šefčovič said ahead of the meeting, while stressing that the need for a continued, long-term transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to the European Union in a reliable, commercially viable way is indispensable.
