Following Season 4's meteor strike, the story progressed throughout culminating in a rocket launch that tore rifts in the sky and started producing portals across the island.

The lush, green forests that Fortnite players had come to know so well has been replaced by a desert, which should help to freshen things up for those who had grown exhausted of seeing the same scenery for months.

"Viking ships, desert outposts, and ancient statues have appeared across the island", tease the brand new patch notes.

There's also a new vehicle, the All Terrain Kart (the ATK) which will accommodate your whole squad. We won't know the full extent of cosmetic changes to the map and exactly what the new season's theme is until the servers come back online. In season 5, the crack adds two new locations on the map: Paradise Palms and Lazy Links.

The All Terrain Kart can fit you along with three others in your squad so that you can go traversing across the different biomes that are dotted around the Fortnite map. "Test your courage and step through a Rift", says Epic. Make up your own game with all new toys, available only in the Battle Pass. There are also some damage and bullet drop-off changes to the SMG.

The way progressive challenges are handled is also changing, starting today with V5. They're also now rewarded based on aquiring a fixed amount of XP, not based on your season level. In addition to balance changes and bug fixes, the latest version of Fortnite adds new locations to explore, a new vehicle to drive around the map, more challenges for free players to complete, and, as always, plenty of new cosmetics to unlock. Rather than their bullet spread being randomised, they'll now fire in a consistent manner, meaning you'll be able to learn where within their arc will actually get hit. Challenges are split into two sections for Season 5: Free and Battle Pass.
