Hurricane Chris now has a maximum sustained wind of 85 miles per hour and is moving northeast at 10 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Chris was expected to become a hurricane on Tuesday and create unsafe swells along the coast of North Carolina and mid-Atlantic states, the National Hurricane Center said.

"This system is expected to move west-northwestward across the rest of Hispaniola today and over the southeastern Bahamas this evening", forecasters said Tuesday afternoon.

Little development was expected Tuesday night due to unfavorable upper-level winds.

Yorkshire is now expected to see wet weather and showers over the next few days, including heavy showers on Thursday, whilst the Lake District and surrounding areas could see thunderstorms.

The National Hurricane Center's advisory stated Hurricane Chris was located about 200 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and was moving in a northeastern direction at 10 mph.

Many North Carolina beaches were closed to swimming on Monday due to heavy surf and unsafe rip currents, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Although Hurricane Chris is headed towards Canada, it will still create severe weather for those on the U.S. East Coast. However by Thursday, it should begin to weaken and will likely become a strong post-tropical cyclone by early Friday.

The swells generated by Chris could also cause could cause "life-threatening surf" conditions, according to the National Hurricane Center.
