The University of Miami nursing student and aspiring model went into shark-infested waters willingly during her trip to the Bahamas with her boyfriend and his family.
The BBC reports she'd finished lunch one day on Staniel Cay with her boyfriend and his family when they came upon people snorkeling with nurse sharks.
But while posing for the pictures a shark bit into the model's wrist and held her underwater for several seconds. Thinking in a much clearer fashion than I imagine I would after having been BITTEN BY A DAMN SHARK, she swam to some nearby steps, keeping her arm out of the water so as not to attract more sharks with the blood. "I've seen countless photos of people with them on Instagram".
"I am so fortunate that I still have my arm and my life", she told NBC.
"I think if someone was screaming and flailing around it definitely could have changed the situation". But not many can say they've actually been bit by a shark in the process. Katarina posted them to social media, where she's been overwhelmed with comments asking for details.
"[The doctors] now believe that I still have pieces of the shark teeth in my arm and I will forever have a scar", said Zarutskie, who noted she was anxious about the injury affecting her burgeoning modeling career. She added the locals were "very encouraging" in telling her to try the activity.
But there were warning signs around the picturesque spot where the shark attack took place.
"You really need to respect them" she explained, but warned future shark swimmers to "take into consideration the risks" before jumping in the water with them. She got out of the water with just the wrist injury.
"He didn't mean it: he's a wild animal, and I think anyone that goes and swims with nurse sharks needs to realise it is an uncontrollable situation".
