WhatsApp beta testing new feature that alerts you of ‘dangerous messages’

Whatsapp's Ad on Tips to Battle Fake News

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been working on a new tool called Suspicious Link Detection which aims to tackle fake news on the messaging platform.

The instant messenger has said that users will now get to know if a shared message has been typed or forwarded and existing group admins will be able to get demoted to a member with limited rights.

The false mesages circulating in India are making people violent. "Double check the facts when you are not sure who wrote the original message", it said. The ad campaign suggested few tips for the users to distinguish between a real or fake message. And if the answer is yes, think twice before sharing it again.

It urged users to check information before sharing it and cautioned them about the spread of fake news.

WhatsApp has alerted people in 10 important points to curb and spot fake news.

The WhatsApp spokesperson did not reply to a specific question on the number of accounts that have been blocked so far this year in India or globally for circulating fake news. Our first step is placing newspaper advertisements across the country in English, Hindi, and several other languages. "We will build on these efforts".

"Like the government of India, we're horrified by these awful acts of violence and wanted to respond quickly to the very important issues you have raised".

Most recently a mob surrounded and killed five men in Maharashtra state denounced as child kidnappers, a pernicious rumor blamed for similar murders in at least 11 Indian states. "If you something that's not true, make people aware and help stop the spread", the ad says.

Lastly, there is the feature where if you received a WhatsApp message, you can find out if it was sent by the sender or forwarded from someone else.

In response to the news, Whatsapp announced that it will pay researchers for studying various aspects of misinformation, which includes election-related issues and viral content that was being spread through the platform.
