Virginia State Police say at least one person is dead after a helicopter crashed into a townhouse complex in Williamsburg Sunday afternoon, sparking a massive fire.
Michelle Anaya provided the information on behalf of Jean Lonchak Danylko's family at a news conference Monday.
Virginia State Police say Danylko lived in one of the units directly beneath where the crash happened.
The confirmed death was not the pilot of the helicopter.
The crash is under investigation, but state police released a statement saying "federal, state and local police, with the assistance of the Williamsburg Fire Department, are working to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter".
"Pilot and aircraft information is still unknown at this time due to structural safety", Anaya said.
Donald Johnson told the newspaper he was 10 feet away from the crash when it struck his apartment building.
Fire crews worked through Sunday night and Monday morning to put out hot spots in the building.
The impact of the crash caused a fire within the Bristol Commons residential complex.
