Chris is now formed off the coast of North Carolina, and as the system moves east it could become a hurricane before the end of the day.
- Gov. Roy Cooper and other state officials are cautioning vacationers and residents on the coast to monitor Tropical Storm Chris, which could be upgraded to a hurricane on Monday.
Tropical Storm Chris was about 160 miles (257 km) south of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina with top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (72 kph), the NHC said in an advisory.
Beryl is expected to produce total rain of 2 to 3 inches through Tuesday across the Leeward and the Virgin Islands, as well as Puerto Rico.
The governor urged people without sturdy roofs to move to one of the 424 shelters that the government planned to open across the island. It was seen staying well off the US coast. The Category 5 hurricane caused more than an estimated $100 billion in damage, killed dozens of people by the most conservative estimates and destroyed up to 75 percent of electricity transmission lines.
The National Weather Service (NWS) maintained a hazardous weather outlook for Puerto Rico, the US territory still recovering from the devastation wrought previous year by Hurricane Maria, warning of thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. "At this time it appears this storm could approach Nova Scotia by Thursday, likely weakening slightly as it does so". The U.S. Virgin Islands, meanwhile, announced that schools and government offices would be closed in St. Croix.
Suns Sign Devin Booker to Max Contract Extension
Booker, 21, is one of the NBA's elite young scorers and his extension cements his status as a major piece of the Suns' franchise. He was drafted with the number 13 pick three years ago and it has proven to be a smart decision by the Arizona-based outfit.
