Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Premier Rob Ford on Thursday
"We were very clear on the campaign trail that we wanted to draw from his expertise in the health-care field and that his job will be reaching out to others throughout the world and in particular across North America and through Europe to see how we can best advance our health-care practices", she said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told Toronto Mayor John Tory that the federal government will support his city as it deals with a large influx of refugee claimants, in the wake of word the Ontario government was refusing to help.
"Ontario is, and always has been, a welcoming place", she said. But Ottawa has for months hinted it could return hundreds of millions in revenues it will raise directly to taxpayers, and not to governments that oppose its plan. "We are ready to recreate this model in Ontario, and we need the collaboration of the provincial government".
In confirming the move on Thursday, a spokesperson for the provincial government blamed the federal government for creating a "mess" by encouraging "illegal border crossers" to come into the country and said that they should pay 100 per cent of the costs of accommodating those people.
"We have to provide due process for people according (to) Canadian law and values", Trudeau said.
"At many announcements in front of media, and at rallies in front of thousands of people, Premier Doug Ford was clear Dr. Rueben Devlin would play an essential advisory role in ending hallway health care in Ontario", Ford's office said in a statement Friday.
In a radio interview before the meeting, the prime minister condemned leaders who engage in anti-migrant rhetoric. "If they really want the province and municipalities to be compensated they must be at the table" said Francisco Rico-Martinez of the Ontario Coalition of Service Providers for Refugee Claimants.
Trudeau didn't make a financial commitment, but replied to Tory that the federal government will be a "good and strong and present partner" for the city.
Since January, nearly 9,500 asylum seekers have been caught at the border.
Neither leader said whether contingency plans were being put in place to deal with the 800 refugee claimants now housed in two college dorms that will have no place to go as of August 9. Tory for his "leadership" on the issue.
"Unfortunately, conservative politicians here and around the world are playing a very risky game with something that shouldn't be fodder for division", he said.
The letter claimed that there were more than 3,000 refugee claimants and asylum seekers living in shelters and hotels. "We are going to be a compassionate government but there is a capacity issue around that".
NDP MPP France Gelinas said the solution to the province's hallway medicine crisis is to hire more frontline staff like nurses and to add more hospital beds to the system.
"He is going to be worth every penny", she said.
Meanwhile, some of those tasked with helping to house the newcomers say the disagreement between Ottawa and Ontario over the issue has left them in limbo.
