Texas's Public Security Department said on Tuesday that the 29-year-old Esmeralda Garza of Corpus Christi was arrested last week.

Authorities say a Texas mother with a drug debt to settle is accused of selling her 7-year-old son for NZ$3,500.

DPS says that agents were executing a drug search warrant in Corpus Christi when they located a seven-year-old who had allegedly been sold and purchased. The boy was bought by two men, according to jail records.

An additional male and female were also arrested in the raid, although it is unclear if they were involved in the alleged drug activity or the sale of children.

Garza is now in custody in the Nueces County Jail. The mother is being held under a $100,000 bond.

Garza, of Corpus Christi, was charged with the sale or purchase of a child, which is a third-degree felony.

The children are ages seven, three, and two.

DPS officials told KIII-TV that additional charges against the man and a woman arrested with Garza are expected.

The case remains under investigation.
