This Atlantic hurricane season will not be nearly as active as last year’s according to forecasters

A low-pressure system and tropical wave in the central Atlantic shows a 70 percent change of developing into a tropical depression in the next five days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Beryl is forecast to have maximum sustained winds of 40 to 65 miles per hour.

Conditions support some strengthening over the next 24 to 48 hours, where the official forecast projects Beryl reaching hurricane strength by early Saturday.

Upper-level winds will become hostile by the time the system nears the Lesser Antilles this weekend.

The National Hurricane Center has been monitoring the disturbance that had a high chance of becoming a tropical depression.

A tropical depression forms when a low-pressure area is accompanied by thunderstorms that produce a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 miles per hour. "Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles [55 km] from the center".

Forecast for Tropical Depression Two.

Another system now centered southwest of Bermuda has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression by the end of this week, according to the NHC.

Beryl is expected to still be a hurricane when it reaches the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

However, Beryl is embedded in dry air and Saharan dust which will inhibit the storm's potential and may limit how quickly additional development may occur.

We are tracking 2 tropical systems in the Atlantic basin.

On the forecast track, the storm could move south of Puerto Rico and make landfall along the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Last year, there were 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes, including Hurricanes Irma and Maria which devastated some parts of the Caribbean.

A tropical depression is expected to form over the next few days as this system migrates northwest over the weekend.
