England will not 'get a better chance to make World Cup final'

Headers from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli tipped the scales on an afternoon short of tension, and they now await a last-four tie in Moscow on Wednesday.

England's Harry Maguire celebrates after scoring his side opening goal during the quarterfinal match between Sweden and England at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Samara Arena, in Samara, Russia, Saturday, July 7, 2018.

England's World Cup quarter-final showdown against Sweden is being touted as the biggest match in over a decade. "It is an incredible feeling". They began marginally the brighter side but are not set up to concede first: they had not done so in their previous four games, and when Maguire climbed high to score, their game plan went out of the window.

They were set on their way when Maguire rose imperiously to head home from a corner and Alli added the killer blow after the break as England showed they are not entirely dependent on the tournament's leading scorer Harry Kane for goals.

England sealed victory when Alli headed in Jesse Lingard's lofted cross at the far post. "The resilience of the team and togetherness of the team today was crucial".

Sweden, which beat Denmark is a tough team to beat.

"Over the years we have underestimated them".

Although Sweden rallied in the final 30 minutes, forcing two good saves from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, England comfortably held on for its first shutout of the tournament.

They had not reached the last eight of the World Cup since 2006 but after overcoming their penalty shootout demons against Colombia - Gareth Southgate's squad is full of optimism.

That said, they posed a threat in the second period and if Pickford had not been on top of his game then the latter stages, at either 1-1 or 2-1, would have taken on an entirely different appearance.

"We knew it was going to be hard, we know what Sweden bring to the party and we managed it very well".

Then, on the half-hour, England scored from their first corner of the game.

"England fans are different class and we really enjoyed playing in that atmosphere".

Captain Harry Kane is the tournament's leading scorer with six goals, although Sweden have kept clean sheets in three of their four matches in Russian Federation.
