That Pruitt has lasted this long is likely attributable to his approach to running the EPA, which many Republicans like Putnam said was unnecessarily burdensome to business under Obama.
Pruitt pushed for President Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, an global agreement to avoid the worst effects of climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. He's been investigated for undertaking expensive, first-class worldwide travel with a large detail, and for spending $43,000 to build a soundproof phone booth in his office. But he added that "the unrelenting attacks on me personally, my family, are unprecedented and have taken a sizable toll on all of us".
Trump said on Twitter that Pruitt's recently-Senate confirmed deputy Andrew Wheeler will on Monday assume the duties of acting administrator of the EPA. "Sadly, the ideological fervor with which Pruitt pursued the destruction of environmental regulations and the agency itself live on in the Trump administration".
"Scott Pruitt did an outstanding job inside of the EPA", the president said Thursday.

Wheeler worked under Inhofe for about a dozen years, according to The New York Times, and is among a growing number of former Inhofe staffers now employed by the EPA. We are happy to see him go, but dismayed that his replacement may well be just as bad as him.
But this less flashy style is unlikely to endear him to environmental groups that had been critical of Pruitt.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office concluded the EPA violated two laws by installing the $43,000 phone booth for his office without telling lawmakers first. Chmielewski said in an interview last month that he was in Jackson's office when Hupp approached Pruitt's chief of staff to explain that the period for transition reimbursements had expired and that Pruitt had not covered the bill. Many questioned the ethics of him renting an apartment in Washington, D.C., from the wife of an energy lobbyist and traveling frequently to his home state of Oklahoma on the taxpayers' dime.
During congressional testimony in April, Pruitt was unapologetic for the controversies, often blaming his staff for any agency missteps.

After almost four hours on the statue, the woman finally accompanied police down off the monument, tethered to them by wires. It also was taking a closer look at the statue to see if there was any damage, though that's unlikely, he said.
