Beryl becomes first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season

Tropical Storm Beryl could become hurricane on Friday

Hurricane Beryl is now located about 1,140 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and is packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, according to an advisory issued by the National Hurricane Centre in Miami at 5 a.m. today. Maximum sustained winds were at 75 miles per hour with a minimum central pressure of 995 mb.

Weakening is expected once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, but the National Hurricane Center said the system may not degenerate into an open trough until it reaches Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea.

The hurricane gained strength Friday morning and was a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of almost 80 miles per hour (130 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Beryl is one of only 2 other storms to become hurricanes in the satellite era before August 1st. But heavy rain and gusty wind could still hammer parts of the islands.

'Beryl is a very compact hurricane.

It is forecast to take a faster west-northwest past through the weekend and remain east of the Lesser Antilles through early Sunday.

Updates on the storm's progression can be found online and NWS is advising residents in the Coastal Carolinas to monitor the storm.

The hurricane is expected to move west to west-northwestward over the weekend and into the early part of the work week, according to the NHC's official forecast path.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to affect the British Virgin Islands late Sunday.

By the morning July 6, Tropical Storm Beryl had racked up enough speed and strength to transform from a tropical depression into a full-fledged hurricane. Alberto formed in May, just before the hurricane season kicked off June 1.
