Senate Republicans Meet Lavrov in Moscow Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit
Peskov's comments come a week after, Putin told US national security adviser John Bolton that Russian-American relations "were not in the best shape", during a meeting in Moscow, according to Russia's TASS news agency.
Peskov says, "President Putin feels absolutely comfortable in all formats that are comfortable for his interlocutors" and the Kremlin "doesn't rule out" such a meeting.
"We come here realizing that we have a strained relationship, but we could have a better relationship between the USA and Russian Federation, because we have some common interests around the world that we could hopefully work together on", Shelby told Lavrov at the start of their meeting.
Richard Shelby, a Republican senator from Alabama who heads the delegation, also called for dialogue, according to a statement from the governor's office.
Peskov said that President Putin "and Russian Federation are open for dialogue and jointly searching for compromises", TASS reported. "We will have to wait and see".
US State Department said on Tuesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier on the day to discuss the future meeting of the two nation's presidents.
The congressmen also met their counterparts in both houses of the Russian parliament.
The U.S. and Russia have been at odds over a number of issues including Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Russian actions in Syria and its 2014 annexation of Crimea.
