Key GOP senator says no Roe v. Wade opponent for high court
President Donald Trump is in the process of picking a replacement for outgoing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, and at least two MI judges are being closely considered.
Collins said she urged Trump during a meeting last week to broaden the list of possible justices he released during the campaign, and that the White House subsequently told her five more people had been added to it.
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, has called the President to express concerns about Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who sits on the federal appeals court and is a veteran of the Bush White House. She is the godmother to one of my daughters, and we have children who have been friends since birth.
"A candidate who would overturn Roe would not be acceptable", said Collins, "because I believe that they have demonstrated a disrespect for the vital principle of stare decisis".
In a series of tweets, Schumer argued that Barrett would support overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision.
The White House also announced Monday that the overall confirmation process would be led by White House counsel Donald McGahn, as it was during the process that led to the successful confirmation past year of Justice Neil Gorsuch.
"I think it's questionable we should be considering a nominee from a president who has a history of demanding these loyalty tests and we could be responsible for participating in something that could undermine that investigation", Booker told the committee.
And it said a team of lawyers from the White House and Department of Justice are gathering information to assist Trump with the process.
The president also spoke by phone with Lee on Monday, as first reported by the Deseret News and later confirmed by the senator's office, which characterized it as an interview.
Republicans control the Senate, which must confirm any nominee, by a 51-49 majority, making the views of moderates such as Collins, and some Democrats, crucial to assembling the 51 votes needed for confirmation. Kennedy often sided with more liberal justices on issues like abortion and gay rights.
He has said he wants to move quickly and he will choose from a 25-person list of contenders compiled for him by White House lawyers and conservative legal activists in Washington.
As he did with the nomination of Neil Gorsuch as a SCOTUS justice a year ago, Mr. Trump is building up anticipation for the announcement, by tweets, public speeches and in interactions with the media.
Trump on Monday said he interviewed four prospective nominees, with more interviews to come.
Mr. Trump is also considering two women for the nomination. Lee has been floated as a potential justice as well in the conservative press. Pro-lifers have long agitated for it to be overturned and return to the states the right to decide if they should or not allow abortions.
