Miles Teller Joins Top Gun Sequel as Goose's Son

Either way, expect Cruise, Kilmer and Teller to suit up in some form or fashion with Top Gun: Maverick departs for theaters on July 12th, 2019.

"I'm taking down all the Tom Cruise posters in my bedroom", he wrote alongside the news.

"Sources tell Variety that "Only the Brave" star Miles Teller has been tapped to play the son of Goose and Maverick's new protege in Paramount and Skydance's "Top Gun: Maverick", the sequel to the 1986 Cruise classic".

Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will helm the sequel, with Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer penning the script. Teller won the part over fellow casting finalists Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell who all screen tested opposite Cruise last week.

Top Gun: Maverick will match the same style and tone as the original film. Maybe, I'll leave one.

Teller confirmed the news on Twitter, paraphrasing the film's famous line, "I feel the need, the need for speed". "Two for symmetry. Okay, the posters are staying", Glen tweeted.

In the planned continuation of late director Tony Scott's original, the titular character (now a flight instructor for the Navy) will reportedly take Goose's son under his wing, though specific story details have yet to be announced.

The 31-year-old actor is one of Hollywood most sought-after young talents.

Teller, who received a BAFTA nomination for Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, is also known for his roles in Project X, That Awkward Moment, and War Dogs.
