Anti-Trump mood sways Mexican voters in U.S. in favour of Lopez Obrador

The next president will also inherit a simmering dispute with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump over migration and trade, with talks to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) unresolved, pressuring Mexico's peso currency. "It is our main economic-commercial partner", he said.

A poll published in May by Seattle-based political research firm Latino Decisions showed that Lopez Obrador had a 23 percentage point lead over his closest rival among voting-age Mexican nationals living in the United States, especially those registered to vote by mail.

Lopez Obrador has pledged to not let Mexico become a "pinata" battered by the United States and rejects Trump's plan for a border wall.

On July 1, the Mexican people elected Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) as their new president.

For much of the 20th century the Mexican state promoted a brand of nationalism shaped by anti-US sentiment and as a result, Mexico remained a relatively closed country both in economic and political terms. In reality, Mexico has always been respectful of Trump and the USA government.

Urzua, a 62-year-old University of Wisconsin-trained economist, spoke to Reuters along with two other advisers to Lopez Obrador, fellow economist Gerardo Esquivel and World Bank governance official Arturo Herrera.

"I have been surprised by the complacency around the win by Lopez Obrador, but there is a mindset of giving him the benefit of the doubt", Lawrence said.

Along with his post, Sanders shared an article which calls Lopez Obrador "Mexico's 'Bernie Sanders'" and describes him as "anti-Trump". He said contracts obtained under energy reforms passed under President Enrique Pena Nieto will be scrutinized for any corruption or illegality, but otherwise contracts will be honored.

Past year the Labour leader went to Mexico to meet Mr Lopez Obrador and they discussed the "dream of realising a world government based on justice and fraternity".

In a speech last month, Mr Lopez Obrador vowed to defend migrants and their rights. She said a Lopez Obrador presidency is a good way to kick the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, out of power.

Surveys conducted by Consulta Mitofsky and Televisa forecast gubernatorial wins for allies of the Morena party in Chiapas, Morelos, Tabasco and Veracruz, and for head of government in Mexico City.

Lopez Obrador's supporters began wild celebrations in Mexico City, cruising up and down the central Paseo de la Reforma boulevard honking horns to the tune of "Viva Mexico!" and waving Mexican flags from auto windows and moon roofs. We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States.

Lopez Obrador won thanks to overwhelming anger at the status quo and his success at presenting himself as an agent of change. Talks between the United States, Canada and Mexico to revise the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have been hard. "Peace and tranquility are the fruits of justice", Lopez Obrador said.

Lopez Obrador said in an interview with the Televisa network Monday that Trump's tweet the night before "was very respectful", and he added: "That is what we always want to maintain with the USA government, that there be mutual respect".
