When on Board the presidential plane Air Force One (air force 1), the wag was presented by the assistant to the Senator, and then Senator Bob Menendez, talked to the President-in-law Jared Kushner, after which he called himself the tramp.
The former Stern show regular said he was connected directly to Trump by Kushner.
In the conversation, a voice that Melendez claimed is Mr. Trump's congratulated the comedian on his success, believing him to be the senator (the Justice Department in January declined to re-try the Democratic senator's public corruption case).
"I mean, we did this as a goof; I'm a comedian", Melendez said.
The fake call was confirmed by the White House Legislative Affairs Office after a follow up with Menendez's office on Thursday revealed the New Jersey Democrat's staffers were confused, saying they had no idea what it was all about.
After a bit of back and forth, and a few stretched truths, Melendez is then called back by Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who asks what he wants to speak with the President about.
The comedian told TMZ on Sunday that he was scheduled for a meeting with the Secret Service on Monday. The Secret Service is not commenting on the matter.
After leaving his messages, Melendez said he returned home, showered and was headed out for a date in Beverly Hill when he received a phone call from a Washington D.C. area code. "I don't think the Secret Service is going to do anything, because I didn't make any money off of this, so hopefully they're going to let it go", he said. A source familiar says Melendez reached out to Avenatti about possible representation, but nothing has been formalized. Speaking to Inside Edition last week, Melendez also offered an apology to the president for the prank. On Sunday, Melendez said he hadn't spoken spoken to Avenatti again.
