16-lens camera maker Light developing 9-lens smartphone
04 July 2018, 08:12 | Jodi Jackson
Light's multi-lens camera tech is coming to a phone
The company has commissioned Foxconn as an investor and said it would launch the smartphone featuring multiple lenses later this year. For those who do not know the brand, Light is a for-profit company focused on revolutionizing the photo industry.
A Light L16 multi-aperture computational camera, a CES 2018 Innovation Awards victor, is displayed at CES Unveiled Las Vegas, a press preview event before the start of CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2018. The multiple lenses work simultaneously to capture an image, each at a different focal length.
US-based digital photography company and camera-maker Light is prototyping a smartphone with five to nine cameras that could be capable of capturing a 64MP image, the media reported.
If you have to see the L16 and buy it for yourself, you may have to pump the brakes. As for what the smartphone will cost is anyone's guess at this point, since it's still in development. The company showed the publication various concepts and prototypes that contained between five and nine lenses on its rear. The L16 camera also has other features, such as portrait mode effects and 5x optical zoom.
The camera is already some way towards being a smartphone as it runs Android and boasts built-in Wi-Fi.
Light's nine-camera phone may take advantage of this tech and put it on a smartphone.
