The so-called Andromeda project has been leaked multiple times in recent months, but now The Verge has uncovered documents not only confirming its existence, but neatly explaining what we can expect from the device. The emails talk about an internal project Microsoft has been working on, a new Surface device, codenamed Andromeda.

Andromeda is expected to be officially revealed by Microsoft this year.

Microsoft is also experimenting with stylus input for Andromeda so that the device can be folded over like a book and the pen can be used to capture input.

Microsoft's Surface range could one day include a folding, dual-screen device. The Surface Pro has been successful on that front, and some companies - even Apple to an extent - is clearly emulating Microsoft's strategy now.

For many, Andromeda is also seen as the long-rumoured Surface Phone, which would seem to jive with remarks from the leaked documents that claim Andromeda is Microsoft's response to its now defunct Windows Phone platform. While the device is still being designed in secret, it apparently has a wraparound display that bridges the gap of the hinge when opened. The report suggests the final product may be very close to the concept art created by David Breyer, shown above. Microsoft's testing SwiftKey integration to make it easier to type on glass, and the company is bringing inking support to the Windows 10 Mail and Calendar apps, a move that may make a dual-screen device more appealing to paper planner addicts.

With two rumored screens, Microsoft may be positioning its highly anticipated foldable PC as the ultimate convertible computing device. Microsoft presently plans to launch Andromeda in 2018 along with other similar devices that will follow afterwards.
