Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign debuts in Europe next month

Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign

Both design house Italdesign and the iconic Nissan GT-R turn 50 this year, so the two companies have teamed up to celebrate.

"The custom GT-R50, which Nissan notes doesn't hint at the next-generation production version of the supercar (rumored to be due in 2020), answers the question: "'What if we created a GT-R without limits, ' and then actually get to build it?" The cabin of the Nissan GT-R50 is also bespoke and dashboard gets a new design that strangely doesn't feature an infotainment system.

Italdesign looked after engineering, development and construction, while Nissan's London and United States of America teams handled its styling. Gold accents echo the exterior treatment across the instrument panel, doors and the futuristic race car-inspired switchgear. The hood has a more pronounced power bulge with thin LED headlights. The most important modification is the roofline that is now 54 millimeters lower than the original and features a lower center section and raised outer portions to "give the roof profile a muscular look". The gold inlay runs from the bottom of the doors to the shoulder line of the auto.

The round rear taillights are a separate floating element. A large adjustable rear wing completes the look. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, sized 255/35 R21 up front and 285/30 R21 at the rear, are also included. "Two different carbon-fiber finishes are extensively used across the center console, instrument panel and door linings, along with black Alcantara and fine black Italian leather on the seats". These tweaking enables the engine to churn out 710 horsepower and 780Nm of torque.

Like all GT-Rs, this one is powered by Nissan's twin-turbo 3.8L V6 engine, but one that has been worked over by NISMO with some GT3 racing technology, like upsized turbos and intercoolers, heavy-duty connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft and bearings, revised camshafts, higher-capacity fuel injectors and optimized ignition intake and exhaust systems.

In case you're thinking this might be a sneak peek at a future GT-R, Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan senior VP for global design, dispels that notion: "Although this is not the next-generation GT-R, it is an exciting celebration of two anniversaries in a provocative and creative way - wrapping one of Nissan's best engineering platforms and Japanese design with Italian coach building". The rear window line descends longer and deeper than on the standard auto, while the GT-R's signature twin round taillights have been binned in favour of separate "floating" features, each with thin light rings and hollow centres.

Behind the wheels, a new suspension system based on Bilstein DampTronic adjustable damping has been developed for the vehicle and six-pot Brembo brakes do the stopping at the front with four pots at the rear. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission was also reinforced to handle all that output.
