Mosquitoes in Suffolk tested positive for West Nile Virus

The first mosquitoes found carrying West Nile Virus have been discovered in Winnipeg

The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. A vaccine for horses is available and highly recommended. "We want to knock down the number of invasive mosquitoes that are capable of transmitting serious viruses, including chikungunya, dengue and Zika, as well as reduce the population of local mosquitoes, which can infect people with viruses we see annually in the valley, such as West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis".

According to Sudia, the most important thing people can do to protect themselves from mosquitoes is to remove any standing water from around their homes, wear long sleeves and trousers, and put on bug spray.

"As we approach WNV season, we encourage everyone to take the proper precautions to prevent mosquito bites when outdoors", stated DPHHS epidemiologist Erika Baldry.

Using insect repellent registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (such as one containing DEET).

Mosquitoes that were collected in the Riverview, North Street and Dumville Lane areas of Suffolk tested positive for WNV, while mosquitoes collected in Cove Point and the Lamb Avenue tested positive for EEE.

The province said it's also a good idea to secure doors and windows with well-fitting screens and to ensure no standing water accumulates on your property.

The West Nile virus has reared it's ugly head for the first time in the province this summer.

Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.

■ Install or fix screens in your home so they are fit tightly.

According to the city, individuals infected with West Nile Virus can show no symptoms, mild symptoms, or severe symptoms.
