Iowans Encouraged to Save Their Own Lives on National HIV Testing Day

For the second year in a row, President Trump has issued a statement recognizing National HIV Testing that omits any mention of the vulnerability of LGBT people to the disease.

The theme for National HIV Testing Day, Doing It My Way, Testing for HIV, underscores that there are many reasons to be tested for HIV and many ways to get the test. Knowing your HIV status can also help protect future partners.

The issue stemming from stigma is that people are scared due to the blame and shame society places on those infected with HIV, said Keegan. The overall number of new HIV infections in the US has fallen for the past several years, from 41,800 in 2010 to 38,500 in 2015, according to the CDC.

There are several testing services, health centers, and other resources that provide HIV testing. So they could be unknowingly passing it on to other people and they're passing it on to people.

Health officials say HIV levels have spiked in Delaware. The Iowa Department of Public Health started its annual "HIV, AIDS, STD and Hepatitis Conference" today.

For people who are HIV-negative, testing can serve as the gateway to prevention services, such a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for those at high risk.

"HIV testing is a priority in our community", Blake said. Everything is completely confidential, and you get your test results right on site.

The study's authors says an estimated 15% of people with HIV do not know about their infection, and are responsible for about 40% of the HIV transmissions each year. Testing technology and methods have advanced so that HIV can be prevented, and those with the infection can live a long and healthy life. It's important to know whether or not you have it.

In Florida, more HIV infections progress to AIDS here than in any other state, in part because many HIV positive people who start taking antiretroviral drugs don't continue with their treatment. It is changing how many people who are HIV negative think about being in relationships with someone who is positive, and it is changing how many people living with HIV see themselves.

Testing is available through private healthcare providers.
