Relay For Life gives people a chance to reflect and show their support

Relay For Life is meant to bring communities together to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.

Photos by Deb Gau Chuck Deutz, of Deutz Auctioneers, opened the bidding Friday night on a commemorative Relay For Life quilt.

EPHRATA- Ephrata High School will be the location of the annual Columbia Basin Relay for Life. She said being part of the fight is paramount to the battle.

"Pink was actually her favorite color", Larson said.

Opening ceremonies will start at 6 p.m. followed by the survivor/caregiver walk. By taking part in Relay For Life, Larson said, "We're celebrating my mom's life", as well as working to help keep other people from ever having to lose a family member to cancer. Klaith died late previous year. In her family, cancer has been an enemy for decades.

The festival feel of the event was new this year, brought on by a desire from the Event Leadership Team to make Relay For Life more accessible to the community.

Linda Fultz, one of Relay For Life of Lyon County's 2018 honorary survivors, said having a positive attitude and the support of family, friends and doctors made a big difference for her. Fultz was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2016, and she's undergone surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Nurse Nancy Harmon, in wheelchair, is joined by her friends and family members for the Survivors Lap that kicks off the event.

In an interview with the Times-Record, committee member volunteers Amy Yokom and Rad Nicholson assured that they still intend to remain active in the community and raise money for cancer research. It doesn't matter if you were diagnosed 10 days ago or 10 years ago, you can walk while everyone gathers together to cheer you on.

Organizers said they work all year to set up the event. Candles honor the community's cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. "I want to keep crushing cancer".
