16 June 2018, 11:43 | Melissa Porter

First human case of plague since 1992 found in Elmore County

Idaho child diagnosed with plague

The diagnosis was confirmed this week and the unnamed child is getting better after receiving antibiotic treatment, USA Today reported.

The department said the child recently returned from a trip to OR, but it's not known whether the youngster contracted the plague in that state OR in Idaho, the Journal reported.

According to the state's health department, it is unknown whether the child was exposed to the plague in Idaho, or if the illness was picked up during a recent trip to Oregon.

There have been eight human cases confirmed in OR and two in Idaho since 1990. In the 14th century, almost two thirds of Europe's population was wiped out by the disease during the Black Death.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the plague was first introduced in the U.S.in 1900 by rat-infested steamships.

Despite this, the disease can still cause serious illness and death if not treated correctly.

According to the most recent data, there were no deaths from plague in 2016, but four in 2015.

This makes the fifth human case of the plague uncovered in Idaho in nearly 80 years and the first one to be detected since 1992.

Human infection cases in the United States are relatively rare.

"People can decrease their risk by treating their pets for fleas and avoiding contact with wildlife", Sarah Correll, an epidemiologist with Central District Health Department, said in the statement about the infected child.

"Wear insect repellant, long trousers and socks when visiting plague-affected areas", she said.

Put hay, wood and compost piles as far as away as possible.

How is plague spread to humans?

Keep your pets from roaming and hunting ground squirrels or other rodents in affected desert areas.

Use flea products on pets - check with a veterinarian for an appropriate product.

Do not feed rodents in picnic or campground areas.

The bubonic plague is the most common form of plague and is characterized by painful swollen lymph nodes.

Rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, bloody or watery mucous.

Don't leave pet food and water where rodents can get to them.

Since 2000, the CDC has received reports of one to 17 cases of the plague per year.

In 2012, a man in OR was hospitalized for plague after he tried to pull a mouse out of his cat's mouth.
