Trump arrives for meeting with Singapore leader

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un

The summit destination is Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island. US officials have said the leaders will meet for privately before holding an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective advisers.

Prime Minister Lee wished Kim success for the summit and expressed hope that the US-North Korea meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the larger region.

The Trump administration has previously insisted on "complete, verifiable, irreversible disarmament" (CVID) of North Korea, with the emphasis on unilateral steps by Pyongyang rewarded by U.S. security assurances.

In tamping down expectations, Trump himself has described this initial meeting as the start of a process.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting.

Rodman has faced ridicule and criticism for his trips to North Korea, which some USA politicians and activists view as serving only as fodder for North Korean propaganda.

Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.

On Monday, Sung Kim, a former USA ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with the North, will lead a United States delegation for a working group with a North Korean delegation at the Ritz Carlton hotel, Sanders said.

While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim.

"We remain committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted. Sung Kim was accompanied by Randall Schriver, an assistant secretary for Asia at the Pentagon, Allison Hooker, the National Security Council director for Korea, and other aides.

For the pariah state, denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula is a situation in which North Korea gives up nukes if the US ends its alliances in Asia, its policy of extended deterrence and ground troops on the peninsula, Victor Cha, a Georgetown University professor and senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said at a Washington event on Monday.

Olivia Enos, policy analyst with the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, said "a successful summit would move beyond mere statements about denuclearization".

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2005.

Later, Kim's plane landed at Changi airport. The session will be expanded to a bilateral meeting and will include advisors.

She emerged as an influential figure in Pyongyang's opaque leadership in February, when she led a North Korean delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.
