Reuters President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hold a signing ceremony at the conclusion of their summit in Singapore on Tuesday.

The US leader was nominated by two members of Norway's governing Progress Party, according to state broadcaster NRK.

Amundsen nominated Trump along with his fellow Progress Party colleague Christian Tybring-Gjedde.

The lawmakers told Norwegian wire service Norwegian News Agency that Trump "had taken a huge and important step" toward peace with North Korea and disarmament. "A process is underway to ensure world peace in the future".

Politicians, academics, former peace laureates, directors of peace research institutes and current and former members of the Nobel Committee are among those who have the right to propose candidates. It's a fragile process, but we must of course do what we can to help this process to bring good results.

"Although it's not a binding agreement, it's still an initiative that opens up for visits both ways, it's an initiative to get the disarmament process started and lastly to put a damper on the military exercises the USA has with South Korea", Tybring-Gjedde said, calling the nomination a "nudge" to make Donald Trump finish what he has started.

The news comes after a group of U.S. lawmakers also sent a letter to the Nobel Committee nominating the president for the prestigious award, citing his efforts to disarm North Korea. The Associated Press reports that Norwegian Nobel Committee itself will not publicly comment on who was nominated for the Nobel as such information is required to be kept secret for 50 years.

Last month, 18 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to the Nobel Committee to pitch Trump for the Peace Prize because of his efforts to disarm North Korea. A record 330 people were nominated this year. "This president is actually going to earn it".

Kim also met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after inviting Trump to meet.

2017 prize went to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
