This will be a model for the future where nations can come together to co-host a 48-country World Cup.

But Morocco, bidding for a fifth time, had closed the gap on "United 2026" to the point that nobody in Moscow wanted to make a public prediction ahead of the vote at the FIFA Congress, where 207 member associations, minus the four bidding nations, cast ballots.

It's Matchday 1 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia!

You can find a full schedule for the World Cup games here.

The winning bid, which should feature 60 out of 80 Games in the U.S., will mark the return of football's showpiece event to North American soil for the first time since 1994.

The average stadium capacity for the tournament is 55,000, with the largest the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, best known as the home of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team.

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid, in a statement. American soccer officials downplayed the influence of politics on the bid. All of the World Cup games will be available here for soccer fans in the U.S.

- How will it work?

The United States last hosted the men's World Cup in 1994.

Wembley will host seven games during Euro 2020, including the semi-finals and final, while in August, the FA announced its bid to host the 2021 European Women's Championship.

Canada and Mexico will stage 10 matches each.

The tournament is expected to generate $5 billion in economic impact for the 16 host cities, according to Canada Soccer. Final logistical details such as host city selection and fixture scheduling will ultimately be settled by Federation Internationale de Football Association.

The North American bid book published earlier this year proposed the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City for the final.
