Oscar De La Hoya Confirms Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Fight Rematch

Gennady Golovkin

Promoter of Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, was the first to announce things a while ago.

Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will meet on September 15 for the rematch boxing fans have been waiting on for the past year, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya.

Saunders pulled out of his fight with Martin Murray this month due to injury, and Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler revealed the Brit was due to compete in a unification fight at the end of the summer.

There was no word on Wednesday about the details of the agreement or even if a contract has been signed. Martirosyan, who hadn't fought in almost two years, barely landed a punch on Golovkin, who scored a vicious knockout at StubHub Center in Los Angeles.

If the former WBA world middleweight champion doesn't fight Alvarez next, Jacobs is expected to box Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight title at some point in October.

The two fought to a controversial draw in their original matchup in September 16, 2017.

The deadline came and went with no update but, suddenly, confirmation arrived in the form of a tweet from Golden Boy's official Twitter account.

It finally looks like we're going to get some closure on one of the most frustrating rivalries in modern boxing as a new date has been set for the rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"In the first fight, it was a respectful promotion, but in the second fight, with the positive test and the way Gennady had to scramble to be able to fight on May 5, he is very edgy".
