Fyre Festival Promoter Billy McFarland Arrested On Fraud Charges

Billy McFarland Charged for Coachella & Super Bowl Scam While Awaiting Sentencing for Fyre Festival

Investors in the festival scheduled for spring 2017 lost more than $26 million in what was advertised as "the cultural experience of the decade". Authorities say McFarland was conducting the scheme even after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and misleading Fyre Media's investors. Not including the offenses for which he has already plead guilty and is awaiting sentencing, McFarland is facing up to 20 years in jail for the new charges. An attorney for McFarland did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment. He also said one of McFarland's colleagues, cooperating with prosecutors, was framing him.

Fyre Festival was one of the biggest flops in the history of music festivals.

"We vigorously contest what is in this complaint", he told U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein in Manhattan.

William McFarland, who is still awaiting sentencing for the failed festival, has now been charged by the Southern District of NY with selling tickets that did not exist to marquee sports and music events.

The "tickets", which were supposedly intended for events including this year's Grammys, the Super Bowl, Coachella, the Met Gala and Burning Man, were sold to 15 people and amounted to almost $100,000.

"The weight of the evidence here is quite strong", Greenberg said.

However, McFarland was charged with an additional count of wire fraud and money laundering late Tuesday afternoon by the Southern District of NY.

McFarland will be sentenced on June 21 in the festival fraud.

"Mr. McFarland is a serial fraudster plain and simple", prosecutor Kristy Greenberg told the judge.

Gorenstein, noting that McFarland would likely face an additional two years or so in prison if he is convicted in the new case, said that if he is freed on bail in the Fyre Festival case, he'll face a $1 million bail on the new charges.
