Lesbian couple kicked out of Uber by 'homophobic' driver
Alex Iovine says their driver reacted irrationally to their backseat display of affection, telling NBC NY, "We peck kissed, like I reached across and pecked kissed her".
Once over the bridge, Iovine said the driver suddenly pulled over and told the women to get out of the auto.
'It's illegal, ' he said. It was during the ride just over the Manhattan Bridge when the couple says the incident began.
One of the outraged women then questions the driver, saying, "What are you f***ing talking about?"
Iovine said her reaction to the ordeal quickly went from shock to anger. Allan Fromberg says it's 2018 and "this isn't the way we live any more". Iovine and her girlfriend Emma Pichl are still upset after being thrown from that Uber auto.
"We were sitting on opposite sides of the auto", Iovine told the New York Daily News. "But I think this has inspired us to get our voice out there more and get out there to celebrate everything this community has done, (what) we have to offer as human beings and the rights that we deserve".
Five minutes later, according to Ms Pichl, the driver "pulled the cab over and said, 'You should not do that ... do not do that'".
The couple become enraged, threatening to call police.
Ms Pichl, 24, said: "I think for both us it was just a shock, not really knowing what to say". The pair had ordered the taxi to take them from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
After the video ended, Ms Pichl said the driver "just got back in his auto and sped off". Why are we getting kicked out of the Uber?' and he said. But please don't comment on someone's appearance or ask whether they are single. "We never thought something like this would happen to us".
Meanwhile, Iovine and Pichl say the incident has changed their perspective on being in a same-sex couple in New York City. "It was a good lesson to show it can happen to you anywhere".
The driver has since been suspended from using the app, with the company revealing it does not tolerate discrimination.
"Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience", Uber spokeswoman Susan Hendrick told the Daily News.
Following reports of the incident, Uber refunded the women their $22 fare and issued an apology.
