It was the first meeting between sitting leaders of the two countries, which are still technically in a state of war.

"Getting a good picture everybody?"

Despite 10 years as a casino worker in Las Vegas and Atlantic City before switching to film, Mr Castaldo said he had never met Mr Trump or worked in a Trump casino.

With his mouth agape, Kim's reaction to the remark appeared to be that of shock.

The summit capped a swift and astonishing turn of events that began on New Year's Day with a pledge by Kim to reach out to the world now that his nuclear forces have been completed.

International security expert and COO of Interfor International, Don Aviv, tells Inside Edition that every bit of food Kim Jong Un ate was previously examined by food tasters.

This is certainly not the pledge for the unilateral dismantling of North Korea's nuclear programme that the United States has always pushed for.

Aviv said the U.S "use [s] chemical tests and biological tests as opposed to someone having to taste the food".

"We will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Trump told reporters, adding that "at some point" he wanted to withdraw USA troops from the South.

News of the decision to halt the drills stoked concern in Japan, with Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera calling joint exercises and the USA military presence in South Korea "vital" to East Asian security.

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S. -DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula", the leaders said in a joint statement. North Korea also wants an end to what it considers America's "hostile policy" and a security guarantee that the USA will not seek to remove the regime.

"We're going to establish essentially normalized relations [with North Korea]", he said, pointing to the summit's backdrop of alternating American and North Korean flags as one indication the USA plans to extend diplomatic recognition to the DPRK. America's friends, Japan and South Korea, didn't do so well.

Donald Trump showed Kim Jong Un a film he had made about a vision for North Korea without nuclear weapons.

Trump and Kim Signed Something in Singapore. He said, look, all of you people who are writing that I gave up too much, that's wrong. They had a summit as a nuclear state with Kim on equal turf with Trump, got the United States to halt joint military exercises with South Korea. Neither the US nor the South Korean government would confirm that the Trump administration warned President Moon Jae-in ahead of time about the decision to suspend exercises.

Many North Korea watchers have noted that the Singapore summit agreement lacks substance, despite Trump touting it as "very comprehensive".

The US would suspend "provocative" war games it holds with South Korea. "North Korea had rice and medicine aid from the U.S. and other countries before, but that did not trickle down to ordinary people", said Ms Park Hyun Sook, a defector who spoke to relatives in the North by phone last Saturday.

A spokesman with Moon's office, who asked not to be identified to discuss internal deliberations, said the government was still trying to understand Trump's "exact meaning or intentions" with the military freeze. "I think he's going to start now", he said.

Trump said verification processes had been discussed at the summit, and that Kim understood it would involve accepting large numbers of USA and worldwide personnel.
