Mercedes To Recall 774К Diesels In Europe Over Emissions Issues

For their part, German firms have announced dozens of new electric and hybrid models for the coming years in a bid to bring down emissions of both greenhouse gas Carbon dioxide - the original reason they turned to diesel - and of harmful NOx.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Vito models with diesel engines and a sports utility variant of the sedan, known as the GLC, were the main cars found to be at fault, the ministry said.

While the KBA can only request the recall of cars within German borders, the transport ministry said: "The government will order 238,000 Daimler vehicles to be immediately recalled Germany wide because of unauthorized defeat devices". A Daimler spokesperson told German language newspaper Bild am Sonntag, who first reported the story, that the automaker was "cooperating to a full extent and transparently with the KBA and the federal transport ministry".

Daimler shares fell following a report that up to 1 million Daimler cars contain illegal defeat devices, as Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche prepared to meet the transport minister on Monday.

It is not the first time Daimler has faced problems with its emissions software.

The reports allege that two engines (OM 642 and OM 651) come with devices that shut down emissions controls under certain situations.

Mercedes-Benz NZ had no comment to make on the German recall.

"Regulatory limits for NOx emissions are also breached by a significant margin when tested in conditions even slightly divergent from those prescribed in the European Union test protocol (NEDC)", Transport and Environment insisted.

"This is partially to improve official fuel economy figures but is also due to questions about the durability of the emissions treatment systems carmakers have used - specifically exhaust gas recirculation systems that pump hot exhaust gases with a lower oxygen content back into the cylinders to lower production of NOx".

Mercedes-Benz is caught up in an emissions scandal of its own.

BMW and, surprisingly, Volkswagen were the best at real-world emissions, emitting around twice the legal limit in the real world.
