In a startling upset, U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford's re-election hopes were dashed Tuesday when he narrowly lost the GOP primary for South Carolina's 1st District congressional seat to Katie Arrington, a freshman state legislator from Dorchester County.

ME voters were the nation's first to use a new voting system in a statewide election letting them rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", the president tweeted, using the initials for his campaign slogan "Make America Great Again". He is MIA and nothing but trouble.

He also slammed Sanford as being 'better off in Argentina'.

Despite her attempt to tie herself to Trump, Arrington supported Florida Sen. "Of course I've been to the White House to see him a number of times to talk about business for SC".

McMaster finished first in the Republican primary that included four other candidates, but he fell short of the 50-percent-plus one majority he needed to capture the GOP nomination outright.

"I can not look my children in the eye and justify a vote for a man who promotes and boasts about sexually assaulting women", Roby said after the tape was released.

Sanford is the second Republican member of Congress to lose in a nominating contest this year, following Robert Pittenger's loss in North Carolina last month.

Heller, the only GOP senator seeking re-election in a state won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016, was originally expected to face a tough challenge from Republican Danny Tarkanian until Mr. Trump asked him to run for Congress instead.

During her victory speech, Arrington thanked Sanford for his years of service as a congressman and two-term governor.

Sanford told aides in 2009 that he was away "hiking the Appalachian Trail" when he was actually in Argentina visiting Maria Belen Chapur, a television reporter who he would later call his "soul mate". "Bless his heart - but it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time".

Here are results from the already-held primaries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and a brief run-down of what to watch across the country Tuesday night. Keep in mind that Arrington didn't just need to outpoll Sanford.

The most serious primary challenge to an incumbent member of Nevada's congressional delegation is conservative activist Sharron Angle's bid for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District. FreedomWorks and Tea Party Patriots stood behind the incumbent. She has sought to brand Sanford, who labeled Trump's tariff policies as "an experiment with stupidity", as a NeverTrumper. Reps. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jim Jordan of OH, the respective current and former chairmen of the House Freedom Caucus, also stood by Sanford on Tuesday.

Trump also tweeted his endorsement of Adam Laxalt, Nevada's attorney general, just after noon Pacific time. But Arrington made an issue of his criticism of the president, calling him a "Never Trumper". "This is clearly not the Republican Party I once knew, loved and proudly served".

Sanford has also split with own party, perhaps most notably in this coastal district, on human contributions to climate change.
