Dennis Rodman Cries from Joy over Donald Trump, North Korea Summit
It came after Donald Trump said the USA would be stopping war games referring to military exercises with South Korea.
But US officials told AFP they were taken aback by the news, and Pentagon personnel spent the morning in meetings discussing what could amount to an epic shift in the US military's posture in South Korea.
Retired NBA star Dennis Rodman has revealed what he thinks about Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump meeting for historic peace talks in Singapore on Tuesday.
Asked about the plan to halt exercises, a USA official who spoke on condition of anonymity shrugged and called it a political, not military, decision.
"The American military presence in South Korea wouldn't mean much if the militaries don't practice through joint drills", said Moon, now a senior analyst for the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.
"It is surely a historical moment that we all wanted to see, but I think it is still early to launch related products celebrating the historical moment of the two leaders", an industry insider told The Korea Herald. "We don't want this whole summit to come for naught". He called the regular training sessions between US and South Korean forces "very provocative" and costly.
"That was a very last-minute", Trump said at a news conference, adding, "the remains will be coming back. This concession today, I was surprised frankly", Perdue said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.
Mr Rodman arrived in Singapore wearing a T-shirt promoting PotCoin, which has sponsored his travel to North Korea in the past.
"This is Trump and Kim Jong Un's day", he said.
A spokeswoman for US military forces in Korea said they had not received any direction to cease joint military drills.
"War games are very expensive and we pay for a big majority of them".
Trump and Kim said they "commit to recovering" the remains of USA service members killed in the war of 1950-1953, "including the immediate repatriation of those already identified".
Mr Rodman was in Singapore for Tuesday's summit, but the White House had said he would play no official role.
Bishop said the sanctions against North Korea remained in place and would not be removed until such time as North Korea had proven it has dismantled its nuclear weapons program. During the 1990s, the United States suspended, and later canceled, an exercise known as Team Spirit as they attempted to persuade North Korea to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities. In the final document, Pyongyang reaffirmed its commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, while the United States pledged to provide security guarantees. Rodman's trip was sponsored by PotCoin, a cryptocurrency company that gives marijuana businesses access to banking as an alternative to many financial institutions that will not do business with cannabis companies because marijuana is illegal under USA federal law.
In the face of the North's constant protest, the allies' militaries have defended the exercises as purely defensive in nature.
