California to vote on proposal to split state into three parts

Radical plan to split California into three states earns spot on November ballot

Draper, a venture capitalist and cryptocurrency enthusiast, obtained enough signatures for the measure to qualify for the state's ballot in November, the California Secretary of State announced late Tuesday.

In 2012 and 2014, Draper also proposed splitting the state into six separate states, yet his efforts failed after numerous signatures his campaign collected were invalidated by election officials.

Southern California, which you might expect would include Los Angeles, instead covers counties ranging from Fresno to San Diego.

In northernmost parts of California, rebellious souls have been flirting since 1941 with the idea of their own state called "Jefferson" which would mesh with the southern counties of Oregon.

Splitting California into three states would require congressional approval.

If the plan was approved by the voters, it would need to be approved by both houses of the California legislature, an unlikely prospect.

Dakota, Virginia and Carolina could soon be joined by California.

Amid worries of a recession, Statham gained the support of then-Speaker Willie Brown to put a non-binding question on ballots across the state: Should California divide into three states? With its 55 electors in the Electoral College, California has always been a stronghold for the Democratic Party.

It got more than the required number of signatures in Tuesday's primary. He bankrolled efforts in 2012 and 2014 to divide the region into six different Californias, spending around $5 million in his most recent endeavor.

Stephen Lam / Reuters This is the third time Tim Draper, above, has tried to split up California. President Donald Trump's victory in 2016 led to a ballot movement to have California secede from the U.S. That effort failed to gain enough signatures last year but was started again this year, CNBC reported.

"California government can do a better job addressing the real issues facing the state, but this measure is a massive distraction that will cause political chaos and greater inequality", Maviglio told the Chronicle.
