White House Trade Official Backs Away From His Insult to Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a press conference

As he flew from Canada to Singapore Saturday night, Trump displayed his ire via Twitter, which he also employed to insult Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

Republican senators sharply criticized Navarro on Monday. "I had a very good meeting with the G-7".

It's unclear what additional action the USA would take against Canada. The threat of tariffs add to the uncertainty in the industry, which faces a potential trade overhaul as a result of Nafta negotiations.

Trump is targeting Canada's supply management system for dairy and poultry as unfair, even though the US runs a $333 million trade surplus with Canada on dairy and a $1.9 billion trade surplus in agriculture and agi-food.

Dairy has emerged as the latest flashpoint between the US and Canada as they renegotiate the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. And I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States and I say push him around? "Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!" I mean we're the architects of this rules-based, global order on trade and security. Germany pays 1% (slowly) of GDP towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while we pay 4% of a MUCH larger GDP.

He had said there was a "special place in hell" for Mr Trudeau for going against US President Donald Trump.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland, is expected to travel to Washington this week, Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported.

Navarro's interview followed another by National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, who called Trudeau's statement as "diplomatic betrayal".

Trump announced significant steel and aluminum tariffs on the U.S.'s northern ally and then blasted the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "meek and mild" after a turbulent G7 summit in Quebec. Kudlow was referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "We just shook hands!"' Trump said. "I think we're in a hard place now, I'd like to see this thing settle down". Can't do it in person.

The latest Quinnipiac University Poll found that a majority of swing voters, 55 percent, support tariffs on Chinese imports, as President Trump has sought to do.

Trudeau's office responded to Trump's tweets with a written statement, saying the prime minister's comments in public and in private with Trump were "nothing he hasn't said before" and that he was "focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit". He had other things, bigger things, on his plate in Singapore. "That will not stand".

"Don't blame Trump. It was Trudeau who started blasting Trump after he left, after the deals had been made". "That's going to cost him a lot of money", he said. Some of Trump's aides also lashed out at the Canadian prime minister.

Earlier on Tuesday at the Washington conference, White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett said the USA and Canada need to "take a deep breath". From promoting democracy and to fighting terrorism, "we're on the same page".

"If you're a negotiator you have to know what's sensitive for the other guy and what does the other guy need to get in order to say there's a win-win outcome", Gifford said.

"It would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us", said Trudeau.

G7 leaders jumped to the defence of Trudeau and reiterated their support for their joint statement.

The United States has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum.

Mr Trump's looming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un heightened tension, and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Mr Trudeau of betraying Mr Trump with "polarising" statements on trade policy that risked making the United States leader look weak on the eve of the historic North Korea summit.
