Donald Trump says his saber-rattling brought Kim Jong-un to the bargaining table
The remarks were made by foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang at a briefing in Beijing after Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised the summit - the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting USA president - as "creating a new history".
In the run-up to the Kim-Trump summit Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassem said that the North's leader should be aware Trump's tendency to betray deals when they talk about denuclearization. But we'll be saving a tremendous amount of money.
"President Trump committed to providing security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".
Trump explained during a post-summit news conference that inspectors will be sent into North Korea to verify the country is moving forward with denuclearization. Since the 1970s, the United States and South Korea have held a major summertime exercise called Ulchi Freedom Guardian that involves tens of thousands of troops. He taunted Mr. Kim as "little rocket man", and warned that the US would "totally destroy" North Korea.
After the Central Intelligence Agency informed Congress North Korea had built a centrifuge facility, another major step in the nuclear process, Pyongyang formally withdrew from the non-proliferation agreement in January 2003.
"I was shocked when he called the exercises 'provocative, ' a very unlikely word to be used by a USA president", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was a politically sensitive issue.
The Pentagon was not immediately able to flesh out Trump's remarks about suspending drills, a move the US military has long resisted. But they are there exclusively for the defense of South Korea. Trump described the exercises as "very provocative" and said Pyongyang "very much appreciated" seeing the exercises end. "At the same time, there needs to be a peace mechanism for the peninsula, to resolve North Korea's reasonable security concerns".
"So I think the rhetoric, I hated to do it, sometimes I felt foolish doing it, but we had no choice", he said.
While an armistice agreement in 1953 ended active hostilities in the Korean War, neither side ever signed a peace treaty, making the Korean War one of history's longest ongoing military conflicts.
