Real Madrid Have Announced Their New Manager

12 June 2018, 07:16 | Charlene Valdez

In a brief statement to announce the appointment, the Madrid giants said Lopetegui had been appointed on a three-year contract.

Before he took over as Spain boss, Lopetegui was Porto manager for two years.

"Real Madrid CF announces that Julen Lopetegui will coach the first team for the next three seasons".

The search to replace Zinedine Zidane, who left after guiding Real to a third-straight Champions League title, lasted nearly two weeks, with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp among the names reportedly in the frame.

He began coaching in 2003 as assistant manager to Spain's Under-17 team and was also in charge of the Under-19s, Under-20s and Under-21s, before moving to Porto. He then succeeded mentor Vicente Del Bosque in the Spain job following La Roja's early exit at Euro 2016.

With Real Madrid appointing Julen Lopetegui after the World Cup is over, plenty are pointing out how this is HUGE news for one current member of the squad.

As a player Lopetegui was a goalkeeper who spent spells as a backup at both Madrid and Barcelona, also playing for Rayo Vallecano and CD Logrones.

Real, meanwhile, won their third straight Champions League crown by beating Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev last month. Spain will face Iran and Morocco in Group B after the challenge of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in their opener on Friday.

In May, he signed a two-year extension to remain as Spain coach until 2020 but the call of Madrid has proved stronger.
