President Trump, Kim Jong-un to Sign Agreement Pledging to Continue Talks

Trump and Kim make history with a handshake

US President Donald Trump gestures as he meets with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un at the start of their historic US-North Korea summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore

Tremendous success. This will be tremendously successful. "But we overcame all of them, and we are here today". But the dramatic act of extending his hand to one of America's longtime adversaries will forever illustrate Trump's gut-driven, norm-shattering tenure. "We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!"

Sanders, Ambassador Sung Kim, and National Security Council Senior Director for Asia Matt Pottinger will join for the working lunch. It's aimed at settling a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal. In question is Pyongyang's precise commitment to nuclear disarmament, and the security guarantees the USA is willing to offer in return.

Pompeo said the meeting could provide "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea.

Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt "very good" before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers. "We're going to have a great discussion".

Kim is widely believed to be a fan of the 1990s Chicago Bulls.

Instead, he told reporters last weekend he would rely on "my touch, my feel" to assess the young and mercurial leader.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to manage expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

As they retreated to a private room for talks, both could be seen talking and even smiling from time to time. He was originally scheduled to leave on Wednesday.

"At the conclusion of the summit, President Trump will participate in a media availability before departing tomorrow at approximately 8 p.m. for the United States", the White House said.

Citing unnamed USA officials, CNN reported that the two leaders will sign an agreement acknowledging the progress of the summit and pledge to keep momentum going.

Mr Trump said he was feeling "really great" and Mr Kim said North Korea and the USA had overcome obstacles to be able to hold talks, saying it "was not easy to get here".

The leaders then walked along a balcony in the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island, the venue for the talks. Pyongyang's weapons program benefits from forced labor. But North Korea kicked out the inspectors after the Bush administration accused it of cheating.

Heading into Tuesday's summit, the big competing items on the table came down to what by now are popular acronyms, with the USA seeking the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, or CVID (complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation), and the North Korean leadership rejecting unilateral nuclear disarmament while seeking its survival, or CVIG (complete, verifiable, irreversible guarantee of North Korea's security).

Details were not shared about how the discussions have progressed so far and Trump and Kim have yet to meet face-to-face.

More than 2,500 journalists have convened here, with each leader's every movement tracked carefully.

Trump and Kim will first sit down for a one-on-one meeting accompanied only by personal translators. While Kim is staying at the St Regis Hotel that has been converted into a fortress ahead of June 12, Trump is reportedly staying at Shangri-La Hotel.
