Many prominent Australians have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

But it is the honours of those people you may never have heard of that are often the most interesting.

Women in business have also progressed, though not fast enough, and Ms Westacott says work must continue on bringing women into executive positions in government, politics and business.

Another task which often goes unthanked is policiing our streets, so congratulations too to our own Leeds lad, police chief and YEP columnist Chief Supt Paul Money.

He was made an OBE in 2007 for his work.

Billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, the boss of chemical company Ineos who this year topped the Sunday Times rich list with #21.05 billion, receives a knighthood for services to business and investment.

"I feel very humbled and honoured to receive this award in recognition of my contribution to psycho-oncology", Professor Chambers said in a statement.

Some 210 people have been made an OBE this year, 392 an MBE, and 318 awarded a BEM (British Empire Model).

The 35-year-old struck up a strong friendship with six-year-old football mascot Bradley Lowery, as the little boy battled a rare childhood cancer last year.

"Often what women do traditionally has gone under the radar and now we are recognising more and more that there's so much everyone in our community does to make it work and women are part of that", she said.

"I like to think this award honours that, and the importance of literature and creativity in the classroom".

Holocaust survivor Ber Helfgott, also known as Ben, is knighted for services to Holocaust remembrance and education, one of almost three-quarters of those on the honours list deemed to have undertaken outstanding work in or for their local community.

Northern Ireland barrister Barry Valentine was awarded an OBE for services to the legal profession and the courts.

The list marks the highest number of women awarded in the history of the Order of Australia, which began in 1975, and a record 15 percent increase in female recipients compared to the Australia Day 2018 Honours List.
