Merkel: G-7 summit with Trump was a 'sobering' experience

U.S. steel-aluminium tariffs result in EU counter-measures

In comments to reporters from her home country, Merkel offered what may be her strongest direct criticism of Trump so far as the relationship between the two leaders continues to fray.

Meanwhile, a photo released by French President Emmanuel Macron's team shows the crowd of officials captivated by something that the European Union poster boy is telling them. Also seen in the picture are Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with his arms crossed and Trump's national security adviser John Bolton among others.

The BBC parsed the picture by identifying all nine individuals in it, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, who is barely visible, and Larry Kudlow, head of Trump's National Economic Council as well as several Japanese officials and US national security adviser John Bolton.

"#G7Charlevoix, second day: A new step has been taken. That was put out by my people", Trump told Stephanopoulos. Echoing a series of comments she's made about the erosion of US-European ties, Merkel expressed consternation about Trump's disavowal of the G-7's joint closing statement. "It may not be politically correct to say it, but we have a world to run". It's long and hard, it takes a lot of time and determination.

"I can imagine Russia's return".

In return, Mr Trump made the French president his guest at his first White House state dinner, after which the U.S. president said of his visitor: "I like him a lot".

Trump also incorrectly claimed that the photo was released by the U.S. team.

Merkel: G-7 summit with Trump was a 'sobering' experience

Merkel described Trump's decision to withdraw his approval of the joint communique following the G7 summit in Canada as a "sobering experience".

President Donald Trump, right, talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after the family photo during the G-7 summit, Friday, June 8, 2018, in Charlevoix, Canada. Instead of fighting big battles with Trump, his counterparts were angling for a baseline of agreement that might be as low as an acknowledgment of the important role of the G-7. Trump initially refused to sign the statement, but agreed to sign it prior to his departure. At a press conference following the summit, Trudeau repeated his earlier description of U.S. trade tariffs as "insulting" and vowed retaliatory measures would come in July. "It's kind of insulting", said Trudeau, noting that many "Canadians fought side-by-side with American soldiers".

On Saturday, Trump reiterated his belief that the U.S.is being taken advantage of by its trading partners and vowed to put a stop to it. "Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", said Trudeau.

His comment sparked a new diplomatic spat between Trudeau and the Trump administration and led Merkel to criticize the US president's handling of the matter. The president, en route to Singapore, lashed out at the Canadian leader via Twitter, stating that the US will not endorse the communique.

But within minutes of the official summit communiqué, Trump lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accusing him of making "false statements" during the closing news conference. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks".

Trump's late arrival also highlighted his early departure.
