Man holds two people hostage in Paris

12 June 2018, 09:59 | Erica Roy

Dozens of police officers converged in an area of central Paris on Tuesday in response to a "hostage taking" situation by an armed man, police sources said.

At least one other man was lightly injured while fighting with the hostage-taker and escaping before police arrived on the scene.

A Paris police official told CBS News there was no immediate indication of a link to terrorism, however members of the force's elite serious crime unit, known as the BRI, were on the scene.

The gunman is reportedly holding the people hostage inside an office. The information could not be officially confirmed.

The incident is not believed to be a terrorist attack although the hostage-taker has reportedly demanded to speak to the Iranian embassy. However, his motivation for such an encounter was unknown.

Shocking photos show police decked out in body armour with a local reporter warning of "an armed man". The man also claims to have an accomplice outside the building.

Negotiations with the suspect were taking place, according to an Interior Ministry official who couldn't be identified because the operation was in progress.
