Officer rescues toddler running on side of Illinois highway
Mannino, who was on patrol, stopped his police auto to block a lane of traffic, ran after the child and scooped him up, telling him "you're OK".
The sergeant pulled over immediately and began chasing the boy, who ran away from him.
Naperville Police Sergeant Anthony Mannino has seen a lot in his 20-plus years on the job, but nothing quite like what saw while patrolling a busy highway several weeks ago. The 1-year-old was running alongside traffic, including large trucks whizzing by at risky speeds.
"You're OK, you're OK", Mannino tells the boy once he finally catches up.
Mannino was presented his department's lifesaving award on Thursday, the department said. The last comment heard in the dashcam footage is Mannino asking the child his name. The child was out for only a matter of minutes before Mannino spotted him.
