Hurricane Bud strengthening off western coast of Mexico
A second system, Hurricane Bud, has since developed in the same region and is expected to send moist, humid air streaming into Southern California late this week.
NHC forecasters said: "Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 miles per hour (185 km/h) with higher gusts".
Some of the wave energy will come from Tropical Storm Aletta, which reached hurricane strength off the west coast of Mexico last week. Its center was located about 230 miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes and 350 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas. "Bud is forecast to weaken below hurricane intensity by Wednesday night".
With maximum sustained winds of 115mph, Hurricane Bud is expected to rip through the western coasts of Mexico in the coming days.
Southwestern Mexico should expect several inches of rainfall from Bud, with the possibility of ten inches in certain areas.
"These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides", the NHC said.
Though forecasters said that "environmental conditions could became slightly conducive for some development" towards the end of the week, the system is now only at a 10 percent chance of forming into a cyclone in the next two days and 20 percent in the next five days.
"Bud is now a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale".
For the season as a whole, three to six tropical cyclones are predicted for the central Pacific hurricane basin, which includes tropical depressions, named storms and hurricanes.
