Trump breaks with G7 joint statement

Trump breaks with G7 joint statement

Hours after the G7 summit, US President Donald Trump is attacking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau again for "false statements", and he is refusing to endorse the summit's communique that called for reducing tariff barriers.

Calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada "very dishonest and weak", Trump said the USA was withdrawing its endorsement of the G-7's communique, in part over what he called Trudeau's "false statements" about US tariffs at a news conference. Later, the document was made public.

Trudeau had said Canadians "are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around".

President Donald Trump proposed the complete elimination of all barriers to global trade at a Group of Seven summit, a move that turns the tables on allies who accuse the USA of wielding protectionist policies.

The group of seven nations that make up the G7 are Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sniped about "stragglers" after Trump was late to a breakfast session on gender equality.

In a flurry of tweets from Air Force One, en route to Singapore for a historic nuclear summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Trump accused the summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of being "very dishonest".

He also announced over Twitter he'd instructed US officials to not endorse the statement, which serves as a declaration and recap of what was decided in the meeting.

Trump's didn't help matters by saying Russian Federation should be invited back to the yearly summit after being kicked out following its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Trudeau said he had told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us". "President Trump had no alternative, in my opinion".

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump said.

Ahead of his departure, Trump had criticised his predecessors for negotiating "unfair" trade deals.

He insisted, like Trump himself has done many times, that Canada has enormous tariffs itself - especially on certain dairy and food products.

Other leaders in the G-7 have not said they agree with Trump's assessment.

"We will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires automatically every five years". "I did suggest it and people were - I guess they're going to go back to the drawing board and check it out".

This year, the summit will be Friday and Saturday in Quebec, Canada.

He further said that he found it "kind of insulting" and that it didn't help in efforts to renegotiate the NAFTA agreement.

But Trudeau later contradicted the president: "We will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires every five years".

Tensions between the USA and its G7 partners over trade and the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal were rife in the face of the summit which had been dubbed by some as "G6 plus one", referring to an isolated US.
