Trudeau said he had told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us". "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump said.
Ahead of his departure, Trump had criticised his predecessors for negotiating "unfair" trade deals.
He insisted, like Trump himself has done many times, that Canada has enormous tariffs itself - especially on certain dairy and food products.
Other leaders in the G-7 have not said they agree with Trump's assessment.

This year, the summit will be Friday and Saturday in Quebec, Canada.
He further said that he found it "kind of insulting" and that it didn't help in efforts to renegotiate the NAFTA agreement.
But Trudeau later contradicted the president: "We will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires every five years".
Tensions between the USA and its G7 partners over trade and the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal were rife in the face of the summit which had been dubbed by some as "G6 plus one", referring to an isolated US.
