Grandmother caught transporting children in dog kennels

Watch: US woman arrested after children filmed in car in pet kennels

A Tennessee grandmother was arrested over the weekend for placing two young children in dog kennels while transporting them around Memphis in her vehicle, according to police.

A 62-year-old grandmother, Leimome Cheeks, was arrested for transporting her grandchildren in dog kennels in the back of her vehicle.

The children told authorities that Cheeks claimed there wasn't enough room for them to sit safely in a seat.

A Memphis woman was arrested over the weekend after she allegedly placed her grandchildren in dog kennels during a vehicle trip across the state, police said.

The temperature reached a high of 95 degrees Saturday in Memphis.

Leimome Cheeks was apprehended by police after the children were spotted on Elvis Presley Boulevard, in Memphis, yesterday afternoon, Fox 17 News reports. "I couldn't see her actually doing that", said Skylarr Blake, who lives doors down from Cheeks. She seems like a nice lady.

A concerned citizen shot the video and forwarded it to the police.

The issues of child abuse and endangerment have been at the forefront of the public awareness ever since 13 children were discovered shackled and held captive in a Perris, California, home last January.

"I think she needs some help".

Cheeks told police that she placed the children in the kennels, but she made sure to check on them periodically.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake".

According to Local Memphis, Nikita Blake, another of Cheeks' neighbours, added: "It's very sad".

Police said the children were 7 and 8 years old.

Ms Cheeks can be seen opening the cage doors to the kennels as the children hop out.
