U.S. evacuates China staffers as illness mystery deepens

A security person walks outside the U.S. consulate building in Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong province Thursday June 7

"The State Department received medical confirmation that a US government employee in China suffered a medical incident consistent with what other USA government personnel experienced in Havana, Cuba", it said in an emailed statement. The U.S.is also examining new potential cases from a U.S. consulate in China.

The Penn team, which published its Cuba findings February in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was not able to prove what caused the symptoms in those patients.

A State Department official said Friday that the two individuals may be new cases, but it has not been "medically confirmed".

"The Ministry of Foreign Relations reiterates that no evidence of the alleged incidents has been presented, and maintains its unwavering commitment to cooperate with US authorities", Cuba's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We are working to figure out what took place, both in Havana and now in China as well", he said.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which has partly rolled back a detente with Cuba, first charged diplomats were the victims of "sonic attacks" and Cuba as the host country was at a minimum responsible for their safety.

A USA official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the situation publicly and requested anonymity, said the evacuated American government workers were being brought from China for testing to the University of Pennsylvania. That's where doctors have been treating and studying patients previously evacuated from the U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Canada in April also ordered families of diplomatic staff in Cuba to return home after mysterious health symptoms were detected in 10 Canadians stationed on the island.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Tuesday the formation of a task force in response to "unexplained health incidents" affecting USA diplomats and their family members.

Guangzhou is one of the most important of the US diplomatic outposts in the country.

It serves four southern provinces with a combined population of more than 204 million and processes more than 1 million visa applications of all types annually.

"We did not find any cause or clue that leads to the mentioned situation by the United States", she asserted. In a statement to CBS News, Lenzi said the ordeal has been "stressful" for his family.

Aled Williams, a British teacher at a kindergarten said Thursday that the reports sounded "sci-fi-ish".

"For me I feel it's very odd".
